What does the Canada Fund look for in a development Project?

The Canada Fund aims to support the efforts of groups that are already helping themselves. It supports small-scale initiatives that promote technical, economic, educational and social development. Particular importance is given to ensuring that projects integrate women in development both as agents and recipients.

Which sectors of intervention do we favor?

The Canada Fund falls under the Canadian assistance program for Bangladesh. The priority areas of funding are:
  • Education
  • Health
  • Water and sanitation
  • Private sector development for sustained and equitable growth
  • Agriculture
  • Micro-enterprises and income generation
  • Human rights & good governance
  • Measures to counter trafficking in women, children, small arms and drugs.
  • Human security specially protection of children
  • Promotion of information technology innovation

    The Canada Fund may support humanitarian assistance (emergency rehabilitation and reconstruction) following major disasters.

    What type of projects can be funded?

  • A project responding to needs expressed by the entire community involved, including women and children.
  • It improves the living conditions of the community while protecting the environment.
  • It creates employment and generates revenues for the beneficiaries.
  • The project ensures reliability/longevity of partner organization with maximum participation of the community.

    Who can apply to the Canada Fund?

    The Canada Fund supports initiatives from a wide range of partners: NGOs, grassroots level organization, etc...
    However, we are preferably looking for partners:
  • that are experienced, dynamic and have established credibility in their field;
  • where group leaders encourage the participation of all members in decision making and share information fully;
  • that have in-house accounting capacity and ability to organize the work to be done and report on their progress;
  • that are innovative and have creative new ideas.
  • who have strategies to ensure partnership, local responsibility and community involvement.

    Example of projects supported
  • Construction and renovation of schools and health clinics
  • Entrepreneurship development
  • Human Resource Development
  • Rehabilitation (Post disaster, disability)
  • Health (Mother, Child and Community)

    Example of activities not supported
  • Recurring costs, such as salaries, rent, utilities, etc.
  • Micro-credit projects.
  • Projects linked to political or religious activities.
  • Projects that do not demonstrate a significant element of "self help". Applicants must be willing to make a
        significant contribution to the project, in cash or in kind.
  • GOB fees or taxes.

    Do you have an interesting project?

    1. Clearly define the objectives and different stages of the project. Provide a detailed cost estimate and identify the financial
        and other resources that the group can contribute. Also identify, realistically, the obstacles you will have to overcome.

    2. Consult with group members who will be participating and the beneficiaries. Ensure that women are involved right from
        the start.

    3.
    Complete the application form available from the Local Fund Management Office and return it to the address indicated in
        this pamphlet along with the necessary supporting documents.

    4. As the project is evaluated, the LFMO may visit you to discuss the project and if necessary assist you in refining
        your proposal.

    5. A selection committee of the Canadian High Commission is tasked with reviewing the Canada Fund proposals. You will 
        get an answer, as soon as possible.

    6. If the project is approved, you will be required to sign a contribution agreement governing the terms and conditions 
        attached to the grant. Funds will be disbursed in installments.

    7. Subsequent installments will be released subject to the receipt of progress reports, financial statements with
        relevant vouchers and visit by the designated representative of the High Commission.
